URMSTON artisan food producers The Smokey Carter are winners for the third year in a row at the Great Taste awards, known as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world.
The Smokey Carter was awarded a 1-star Great Taste award, meaning judges dubbed its Jamaican Jerk BBQ Rub and Spiced Mango & Lime Rub as simply delicious.
They also received a 2-star Great Taste award, judges declaring its Pitmaster BBQ Rub as outstanding.
The judges said: “The rub has a lovely colour and texture, is cleverly balanced, beautifully blended and comes alive in the mouth. Fruity and full. They’ve crammed a lot into this.”
Dedicated producers of BBQ dry spice rubs, BBQ sauce, hot sauce, chilli jams and spiced chutneys, husband and wife team Howard and Samantha Carter make all their sauces and rubs by hand at home to ensure great quality.
Great Taste is widely known as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. The awards are decided by over 500 of the world’s most renowned chefs, food critics, producers and journalists.

The Smokey Carter has recently completed a crowdfunding campaign with Tesco BackIt which will allow them to invest in a new website, merchandise and marketing materials. It has also currently have two brand new sauces in development, and are hoping to scoop more awards next year. The company is set for a full rebrand of all their labelling and is redesigning their full gift range which is available on Not on The High Street.
You can now also sample their products at The Surgery restaurant in Urmston which opened its doors earlier this year. The new menu, which launched this week features a number of sauces and rubs from The Smokey Carter and you can also help yourselves to its sauces on the table.
